Description

This original restored M17 Austrian helmet duplicates one of the rarest helmets of the WWII era. Before decal use became widespread the SS made use of hand rendered insignia. From 1934-1935 the SS-VT wore helmets with a hand painted “mobile swastika” and SS runes.

The helmet used here is an original Great War produced Austrian M17 in size 66. There are no factory stamps as is common with these helmets, but a heating lot number can be observed in the dome. Like all originals this helmet was painted first with a shade of pale grey green and then was over-sprayed black for use parade use. Both insignia were applied with white paint by hand and show typical imperfections that can be seen on original examples.

The helmet is fit with a three pad Great War pattern liner. The chinstrap is a 1930s Austrian Bundsheer pattern. Photos show these were a relatively common choice.

The helmet has been heavily distressed to look and feel original. The finish shows evidence of being waxed and polished. There are scuff and scratched from being dropped on cobble stones or knocking against field gear and other equipment. There are a few scrapes from a Gew98 as well, adding to the realism.

Only a handful of original SS-VT parade helmets are known to exist. A restoration is definitely the way to go, and you’ll always know exactly what you are getting.
