Description
This is an original restored German M42 helmet in desirable size 68. The shell is marked on the skirt qVL 68. This is one of the unknown markers. It is theorized by some that these helmets were manufactured by a satellite factory of ,Eisenhüttenwerk Thale possible in occupied Czechoslovakia. Whoever made them, it is generally believed they were produced in 1944.
This helmet was stripped of all post-war paint. The paint in the inside of the shell is the original factory applied WWII paint and was left as it was found. The helmet’s restoration was based on those worn by German soldiers during and after the Normandy invasion. The combination of tan, red-brown, and green could have been seen during Nijmegen as well as anywhere on the Italian front. The wet camouflaged paint was sprinkled with wood chips to flatten the finish, a common practice during the war. The helmet was then fit with a five-twist chicken wire half basket. The wire is the single twist version generally available in Europe to German soldiers during the 1940s.
The helmet has been fit with a museum quality reproduction liner and chinstrap.
