This is an original U.S. type V experimental helmet. About 1500 of these were made near the end of WWI. A small number did go overseas and were worn on the Western front by the AEF in 1918. When restoring this helmet a small patch of surviving original paint was found under one of the bails, which was matched. The heavy saw dust finish was replicated from photos of originals.
